Writing for a specific audience, with specific problems, in specific language, has always been the right approach. The 2010s tolerated vagueness because Google couldn't tell the difference. Now it can. And so can AI systems deciding which sources to cite.
Content as a compounding asset still works. The 2010s logic that each blog post builds on the last, creating cumulative authority, remains sound. What changed is the timeline and the mechanism. You're no longer compounding indexed pages. You're compounding trust signals, citation frequency, and audience recognition. That takes longer but decays slower.
The Measurement Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About
Attribution in 2026 is genuinely messy, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
The 2010s gave us clean dashboards. Organic sessions, keyword rankings, conversion rates by landing page. Google Analytics was the source of truth, and content ROI could be calculated on a per-post basis with reasonable confidence.
That framework is insufficient now. Traditional metrics like clicks and traffic are no longer enough. Success increasingly requires tracking share of voice, visibility in AI responses, and citation frequency. But the tooling for measuring AI citations is immature. There's no "Google Search Console" for AI Overviews citation tracking, at least not yet.
We track branded search volume growth as a proxy. If your content is getting cited by AI systems, branded searches tend to increase as users encounter your name in AI-generated answers and then search for you directly. It's imperfect. It's also the best signal available right now.
Some teams are also monitoring referral traffic from AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) as a separate channel in analytics. The numbers are small compared to organic search, but they're growing, and the conversion rates on that traffic tend to be higher. AI in Production: Everyone Has It, Nobody Wins With It Alone

If we were building a B2B content operation from scratch right now, we would not replicate the 2010s playbook at higher speed. We'd start with 86% of marketers who plan to increase original research budgets and ask why.
Original data is citable. It's the thing AI systems link to. It's what earns trust signals. And it doesn't have to be expensive. Survey your customers. Analyze your product data. Publish benchmarks from your own operations. A 2-person marketing team with access to internal data has more raw material for citation-worthy content than a 20-person team producing generic thought leadership.
We'd publish less frequently but with more depth per piece. We'd track citations alongside rankings. And we'd accept that some of our best content will never rank #1, because its job is to be cited, not clicked.
The 2010s built the infrastructure for B2B content marketing. The scaffolding is still useful. But the building going up on top of it looks nothing like what we planned ten years ago, and pretending otherwise is the most expensive mistake a marketing team can make right now.
